This project was conducted for my undergraduate capstone project.
Problem Space
According to the book Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men by Caroline Criado Pérez, 75% of the world's unpaid care work is conducted by women. Additionally, as stated by the United Nations women have taken on additional household burdens throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Upon learning these facts I developed the initial idea for Aaida around the concept of reducing women’s inequality through empowerment. By creating a safe space for women, we could free the household burdens for the women who are too busy while providing jobs that women already do daily.

Aaida is an app designed by women for (but not exclusively) women in order to create and foster a safe community that will empower women by providing more flexible job opportunities while helping unburden unpaid care work. Our product will allow our users to find or provide support and in turn, empower women in their local communities.
This project was divided into three iterations where each member took on a new role and responsibility for each iteration. Additionally, throughout the project, I acted as the design system manager. To read about our full process, including our research report, business plan, and design choices feel free to explore our full iteration reports below.

Role: UX/Visual Designer
Research
Throughout each iteration, we conducted various forms of research to help inform our decisions.
In Iteration 1, we conducted secondary research and did a competitor analysis to get an idea of the current landscape and hone in on our differentiating features. Additionally, we conducted a survey about household tasks which resulted in 32 responses. We quickly realized that there are two main user groups for our product, those wanting to find work (workers) such as Diligent Delilah, and those looking to hire individuals (employers) such as Busy Barabara through our findings we developed our personas and user journey maps.

Branding and Design System
To create a cohesive image across all deliverables, Yenvy Chau designed Aaida’s brand guidelines. From that, I designed, built, and managed a design system throughout this project that ensured that our high-fidelity prototype would remain consistent despite the changing roles.

Prototyping
During each iteration, we designed three full task flows: Out of Box Experience (OOBE), Runtime Employer Flow, and Runtime Worker Flow.

Safety
Our biggest challenge throughout this project was considering how we could ensure safety for all of our users. From the start, we introduced mandatory ID verification and restricted users to 18+ however we knew that would not be enough. By iteration 2 we created a more in-depth reporting system and by our third iteration created an emergency services toolkit that allows users to make emergency calls to 911 or an emergency contact. Additional safety features that we felt should be considered in the future are trusted in-app contacts, progress check-ins, and inappropriate message detection.

High-Fidelity Protoype
Although I had a helping hand during prototyping and designing in each iteration, my main responsibility was iterating and prototyping the final “Helper Runtime Flow w/ Delilah”. View this final flow in our final high-fidelity prototype.
